Oliver referees Real Madrid-Inter, controversy over the penalty for Juventus

UEFA has appointed Michael Oliver as the referee for Real Madrid–Inter, scheduled at the Bernabeu for the Champions League opener. The English referee will officiate his fifth match involving the Nerazzurri, after three wins and a draw in the previous four encounters.

There have been five matches of Real refereed by Oliver, with a record of three wins and two defeats. One of these eliminations remains particularly memorable: it was the 2017/2018 quarter-final clash, when Juventus won 3-1 in Madrid but was eliminated by a penalty awarded to Real in the final minutes. From the spot, Ronaldo beat Szczesny, who had come on for the sent-off Buffon, condemning the Bianconeri despite their victory at the Bernabeu.

The refereeing team for Tuesday evening’s match will be entirely English: alongside Oliver will be assistants Stuart Burt and James Mainwaring, with Sam Barrott as fourth official. In the VAR room, the Scot Andrew Dallas will operate, assisted by the Englishman Michael Salisbury.

Inter arrives at the match after their comeback win against Napoli, with the team still savoring the joy from Sunday night’s victory.
