With the recent arrival of Tomas Palacios, Inter has completed the squad for the 2024/25 season. Although it was not initially planned by the management, the 2003-born Argentine center-back became a priority when Tajon Buchanan of the Canadian National Team suffered an injury.
After undergoing surgery on his shin last July, the winger’s recovery is going particularly well. However, Simone Inzaghi will not have him available before November: hence the need to add a left-footed center-back like Palacios to the squad, replacing Carlos Augusto on the left flank as vice Dimarco.
Looking at the current wingers in the squad, Inter can consider itself complete: on the right with the Darmian-Dumfries duo, on the left Dimarco-Carlos Augusto, with Buchanan versatile enough to use on both flanks. However, things may change dramatically in the future.
For instance, a year from now, the right flank could be completely revolutionized. Darmian, who is no longer young, could be repositioned to the defense. The Italian has started very strong this season, but in a football that requires a huge expenditure of energy from the externals as Inzaghi’s, he might have to scale back his range of action.
The situation is different for Dumfries, who is in his final year of contract with Inter. It’s true that discussions for renewal are going well, but the possible inclusion of a termination clause for about 20 million euros on his contract could still take him away from Milan at the end of this season. At that point, Buchanan would be permanently diverted to the right to take over the Dutchman’s legacy.
Another low-cost solution, in addition to the internal one that leads to the Canadian, is represented by a possible free agent recently linked to Inter. We are talking about Devyne Rensch, a 2003-born player whose contract expires in June 2025 with Ajax. The Dutch winger is already on Inter’s radar and is particularly appreciated by Oaktree for his young age and the enormous potential for growth in front of him.
