Cristian Romero continues to be at the center of transfer rumors, with Spain as his preferred destination but economic obstacles slowing down any deal. Matteo Moretto, speaking on Radio Marca, provided a detailed overview of the Tottenham defender’s situation.
The Argentine center-back would give priority to the Spanish Liga. He would really love to play in Spain and would be truly excited to sign for a top-flight Iberian club. At the moment, there are two interested clubs: Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. As for the Catalan club, although there have already been contacts with the player’s entourage, the defender is not currently a priority. Barça is evaluating other profiles and wants to address other areas of the pitch first.
For Atlético, on the other hand, the deal is currently quite complicated due to salary and outgoing transfers. The club must first free up space in the squad and on the wage bill. The defender earns a lot: his salary would exceed 7 million euros net per season.
Inter, for this very reason, is close to withdrawing from the race. The main problem is the salary. Moreover, the Nerazzurri have just signed John Stones, who arrived on a free transfer after the end of his spell at Manchester City.
The Argentine therefore finds himself in a waiting situation. He would like to move to La Liga, but for now no club has taken the decisive step, also because there are not many clubs able to meet his financial demands, especially in terms of salary. Tottenham would also ask for a very significant fee to let him go. According to Moretto, we are still talking about a key player, probably even one of the captains, who has recently renewed his contract. There is a very good relationship between the defender and Tottenham. The player has always shown himself to be extremely professional and involved in the project. The situation is somewhat reminiscent of Rodri’s with Manchester City.
