Switzerland exited the World Cup after their quarter-final defeat against Argentina, but Manuel Akanji wanted to highlight the great performance of his national team, which managed to trouble the Albiceleste despite being outnumbered. “Until the 2-1 goal in the 112th minute, Argentina had practically no scoring chances. We played very well and were the better team. I am super proud of our team and of this World Cup.”
The Inter defender took advantage of the post-match to respond directly to Jens Lehmann, who had made some particularly provocative statements before the match. The former Germany goalkeeper had mocked Switzerland’s chances against Messi and his teammates, claiming that the Swiss players were mainly interested in getting the Argentine star’s shirt. “I think the Swiss can’t wait to get a shirt or something like that from Messi after the match,” Lehmann had said.
Words that Akanji did not forget: “To Jens Lehmann I send my regards, who said we were here just to swap shirts. You saw what we were capable of doing, even with ten men.” The defender then doubled down, defending Switzerland’s progress in recent years. “I find it outrageous that people make such disrespectful comments after the excellent performances we have delivered for years, even in this tournament. Especially considering Germany’s position and their recent results.”
Akanji concluded with a clear message: “Maybe some people consider us a small Switzerland. But I don’t think anyone underestimates us anymore.”
