The new Champions League has taken shape with the draw of the first phase. Inter has not been particularly lucky and will face Manchester City, Bayer Leverkusen, Young Boys and Sparta Prague away, while hosting Leipzig, Arsenal, Red Star and Monaco at San Siro. The Nerazzurri will start their European campaign the day after tomorrow, Wednesday 18 September at 9:00 pm, on the field of Manchester City managed by Pep Guardiola in a re-edition of the Istanbul 2023 final.
In addition to the eager anticipation of discovering the new format and enjoying the big matches, a lot of curiosity is already projected onto the forecasts. In fact, many people are wondering how many points are needed to advance directly to the round of 16, thus positioning themselves among the top eight teams in the total ranking of 36.
With no precedents to refer to, we have to refer to estimates made by both UEFA and simulation experts. Well, the range would be between a minimum of 14 and a maximum of 18 points. With this last figure, the teams would be practically certain to reach the second phase without going through the play-offs.
Therefore, Inter needs to aim to win at least five matches, adding a couple of draws, to have sufficient hope. The task is not prohibitive, but it will require drawing from the entire squad to dose the forces given the numerous consecutive matches.
